Facebook launches Instagram Reels: the new feature that challenges TikTok
Facebook launches Instagram Reels . Clip lasting 15 seconds, with video effects and songs in the background. We are not talking about TikTok , but about the new Instagram Reels feature that presents itself as the rival of the Chinese social network.
We already announced it in November, when Reels was testing in Brazil . And now it has officially arrived in Italy, the United States and 50 other countries.
To announce it, in an official post, is the same company from Menlo Park , which explains how with Reels you can create “ funny videos to share with friends or with anyone on Instagram ”.
Thus begins a new era for Facebook: the era of clips .
Instagram Reels: the rise of the TikTok competitor
Instagram Reels is a new way to create fun and engaging video content from Instagram Stories.
This is not a new application, but a new Instagram format . Like TikTok, Instagram Reels allows you to create and edit short 15-second videos with filters, effects and music.
With Instagram Reels you can insert audio effects, songs by famous artists or unreleased recordings and videos , such as slow motion or customizable backgrounds . The tools made available by Instagram Reels will be “ easy and intuitive, to allow everyone to give vent to their creativity “.
The reels can be published as normal posts, thus ending up in the feed or within the Stories. The reels created from public profiles can also end up in Explore , a section within which users will be able to consult similar content recommended by the algorithm.
Instagram launches Reels: how does it work?
Instagram Reels will be available within the Instagram camera, next to the other modes already used to create stories.
To add music, search for a song from Instagram’s music hybrid . You can also use your own original audio .
When you share a reel with the original audio, your audio will be attributed to your profile and, if you have a public account, people will be able to make new reels with your own audio , selecting “Use Audio” directly from your reel.
Augmented Reality Effects
You can select one of the many effects from the library, made by Instagram and creators around the world, to record multiple video clips with different effects.
Stopwatch and countdown
You can set the timer to record your clips without having to hold your smartphone in your hand.
Once the record button is pressed, a 3-2-1 countdown will appear, indicating the actual start of the recording.
You can align subjects from the previous video before recording the next one.
This allows you to make smooth transitions, useful for example for changing clothes or adding new friends to the reel.
You also have the option to choose to speed up or slow down a portion of the selected video or audio , to keep pace or take slow motion videos.
Reels can be recorded one at a time, all at once, or using videos from the smartphone gallery.
To record the first clip, just click and hold the record button. To end the videos, simply stop recording.
With Instagram Reels, you can share content with your followers or be discovered by the huge community of Instagram on Explore .
When sharing reels with certain songs, hashtags or effects, they may also appear in searches for the hashtags or effects used.
For those with a private profile, Reels follows the Instagram privacy settings .
You can then share in the feed so that only your followers can see the reel.
Once the reel is ready, you will be taken to the sharing screen . Here you can save a draft, change the cover image, add a caption, hashtags and tag friends.
After sharing it, the reel will appear in a separate Reels section within the profile.
Regardless of public or private profile, you can also share the reels in your own stories.
The competition with TikTok
Reels could be seen as a response to the growing popularity of TikTok over the past 12 months.
TikTok recorded “ the highest number of downloads ” in the first quarter of 2020.
And TikTok’s target is changing fast . While it was once Gen-Z users who used TikTok, now it is the Millennials who represent the largest number of TikTok users, making the platform much more interesting for brands.
According to recent data from Comscore , the percentage of US-based TikTok users aged 25-34 has increased from 22.4% January to 27.4% in April , while the 18-24 age group fell from 41.1% to 35.3% .
Facebook has chosen the most delicate moment for TikTok to launch its clone: Instagram Reels.
Just in these days President Donald Trump has launched an ultimatum on the social TikTok: the Chinese company ByteDance must sell its shares if it does not want to risk the embargo.
There are many similarities between Instagram Reels and TikTok not to think of a gauntlet for Chinese social media.
And the expansion into new countries, including Italy, is a sign of a desire to speed up the times so as to be able to take advantage of the very delicate moment that is opposing the Chinese app.
And you, have you already tested Instagram Reels?
