What is TikTok and why is it so popular? + Latest statistics on social media networks for 2020.
Once again, China is ahead of the rest of the world: it was here that the unique, incredibly growing social network TikTok (TikTok) was created.
Do you have a TikTok account? What about your children or grandchildren? If not, we advise you to give it a try – watching short funny videos helps a lot to relax and cheer up. Maybe that’s why the new social network is growing so rapidly?
If you still do not understand what we are talking about, here is a little help:
TikTok is a social network launched by Chinese billionaire (70th in the world, 25th in China by wealth) Zhang Yimin in the summer of 2018. This modest man is not particularly willing to communicate with the press, and it is very difficult to find his photo on the network. At the beginning of his career, he was engaged in the creation and optimization of websites, and as a result, he created his own service for finding real estate. He then founded ByteDance, which launched the social network Douyin.
In case you’re not aware, TikTok and Douyin (in Chinese 抖 音; Dǒuyīn) use the same software, meaning they are identical, but work separately to comply with Chinese censorship restrictions.
Douyin began its work in China back in September 2016. Tik Tok, in its current guise, was launched outside the Middle Kingdom in 2017, but the popularity of the new application came a year later. In order to enter the American and then the global market, in August 2018, Douyin acquired another social network – musical.ly, and then merged it with TikTok. Musical.ly’s already established popularity among American teens made TikTok the most downloaded app in the United States in September 2018.
Today, ByteDance, which owns TikTok and Douyin, is worth an estimated $ 75 billion, making it one of the most expensive startups in the world.
How many users does TikTok have in the world?
TikTok, or more precisely Douyin, was launched in September 2016, and in the four years since the launch of the application, it’s safe to say that its popularity is growing very quickly.
According to We Are Social as of early 2020, TikTok has over 800 million active users worldwide .
It’s important to note that half of these users, or 400 million, are in China, where the population uses the Chinese version of an app called Douyin. The remaining 400 million users are scattered around the world. What’s even more interesting is that TikTok’s user base is growing much faster than Instagram, which took 6 years to gain the same number of active users per month. I think we can safely assume that at the moment TikTok is the main competitor of Instagram and is already starting to step on its heels. Let me remind you that according to official data, Instagram now has more than 1 billion users in the world.
As for the global audience outside of China, the Top 5 countries by the number of active users looks like this:
- India (190.6 million users)
- USA (41 million users)
- Turkey (23.2 million users)
- Russia (19.9 million users)
- Pakistan (19.5 million users)

TikTok usage statistics in Russia
As for the Russian audience, now TikTok is a very hot topic with us. The popularity of the application is growing really quickly and, the most interesting thing is that not only among teenagers, but also among older young people.
The data, which I will discuss below, is the official information provided by the service representatives. These data were announced during the conference “Marketing #Realtime”. Please note that we are talking only about Russia, that is, data
According to the data for 2019, the monthly active audience of TikTok in Russia amounted to 18 million people of which 60% are women, and the remaining 40% are men .
Audience is divided by age as follows:
- 43% of the audience are teenagers;
- 33% of users are young people aged 18-24;
- 21% – users from 25 to 34 years old.
Interestingly, Android users make up the lion’s share of the audience, that is, 73%. The remaining 27% is accounted for by iOS users.
As for the amount of time users spend in social media. network, then the data we have is the following:
- On average, a session lasts about 45 minutes.
Teenagers make up 43% of the audience, 33% of users are people aged 18 to 24, 21% are users from 25 to 34 years old. The application is much more often used by those who prefer the Android system – 73 %, IOS fans only 27%. On average, one session lasts 45 minutes, and the number of video views in Russia is 20 billion per month. Representatives of TikTok did not comment on the statistics, noting that they did not disclose such data.
Initially, many were of the opinion that TikTok is a social network in which mostly teenagers sit. Perhaps because TikTok owes its first wave of popularity outside of China to American teens. However, according to statistics, 60% of Chinese TikTok users are 25-44 years old, while in other countries 43% of users are over 24 years old. At the same time, 56% of social network users are male, and most of them are concentrated in China, the homeland of the social network. In 2018, the app was downloaded more often than Instagram, and today it remains the most downloaded app.
Why has Tik Tok become the fastest growing social network in the world? What is the secret of its popularity?
So what’s the secret to TikTok’s popularity?
Many experts agree that the key to its success is the successful combination of all types and types of content at once .
If, for example, Instagram is a social network for visuals, where photos are most often posted, and YouTube is exclusively for videos, then TikTok easily combines both of these formats.
How does TikTok work?
TikTok was originally conceived as a platform for 15-second lip-sync videos , that is, short videos in which the user hums a famous melody or repeats a funny phrase, trying to move his lips in sync with the original. But now content on the site has become much more diverse : here you can find both music and humorous videos.
Various kinds of challenges are also very popular. This is such a special genre of video in which users perform tasks and offer to repeat them to others. For example, pouring a bucket of ice water over yourself, performing certain dance moves, or talking about something.
This format is actively used by companies to promote their products or services. By launching such challenges among bloggers with a large reach (those whose videos are guaranteed to receive a large number of views), they tell a wide audience about themselves in a light, humorous way. There are many potential clients among the audience, which allows you to be “heard”, or, more precisely, in plain sight. It also helps with branding masks and stickers that users can use in their videos.
“ duets ” are also very popular among TikTok users. This is a video, recording which one user, as it were, passes the baton to another, offering to respond to his recording. Often, very successful, funny and funny stories come out that go beyond the network.
Usually, according to the plot, the videos are mini-clips edited using the built-in functions of the application – various filters and masks. However, you can upload a video created and edited in another video editor. In this it is somewhat similar to Instagram, but it is not necessary to register with TikTok. However, in this case, you will not be able to publish your videos – only view the feed. But in any case, be careful, as Tik Tok is very addictive! 😀
Like most other social networks, TikTok allows you to repost, like, follow other users, comment on posts and chat.
PS For a faster promotion in Tik Tok, we recommend that you try the Tokker service. With its help, you can automatically celebrate the likes of videos and comments, as well as massively subscribe to users. Simply put, all the same automation as in VK and Instagram, only in TikTok.
Advertising on TikTok
According to the social network itself, at the end of 2019, its audience worldwide amounted to 800 million monthly users, and the application became the most popular free application in the Entertainment section of the App Store. Of course, the management of the social network does not miss the opportunity to make a profit, and in the wake of popularity, it opened up an opportunity for brands to launch ads on their site. So far, only 5 advertising options are offered, one of which is buying a hashtag and simultaneously running a challenge using it. This pleasure is not cheap. First, TikTok has a minimum budget of $ 500. In general, prices vary greatly from $ 10 for 1000 impressions to $ 300,000 for large advertising campaigns
The Coca-Cola company was one of the first in the world to offer advertising on TikTok. She launched the #sharecoke challenge, where participants had to upload funny videos with a bottle of drink. Now the hashtag has more than 6 million views. History is silent about how much this advertising campaign cost, but it is clear that this challenge is not at all cheap, and a customer (especially such a large one) would not save money on it.
From 2017 to 2018, the income of the social network has grown 3 times. In-app purchases made up the bulk of the profit.
As at the initial stage of Instagram development, thanks to a special algorithm setting, absolutely any user can get millions of views on TikTok today and become megapopular. This does not require absolutely any financial investment – only the ability to create a viral video that will be interesting to other users. Perhaps this is another reason why the social network is so popular among young people, many of whom dream of glory.
However, even a more mature audience is not averse to taking advantage of the opportunity to earn not only popularity, but also money.
Looking at such a rapid development of TikTok, the growth of its popularity not only among the younger generation, refusing in its favor from the familiar and (honestly, boring) Facebook and Instagram, you involuntarily begin to think about following their example. Everyone here speaks the same language of humor and memes, and that’s great! This format allows to unite rather than separate different generations of people, helps them to find a common language despite the notorious conflict between fathers and children.
While many people think TikTok is for teenagers, they are wrong. Firstly, statistics speaks about this, and secondly, each of us is able to rid this world of stereotypes. Start with yourself – sign up for TikTok! Make sure that children and adolescents should not be severely restricted in access to this social network. Although there were controversial moments in its short history, now they are in the past.
Of course, TikTok’s algorithms are not so perfect as to completely shield users from unwanted content, but they are able to at least partially filter out unnecessary ones. It is not worth letting the independent stay of minors on the Internet in general, and in this social network in particular, take its course. At least minimal control is necessary – every parent understands this. But, you see, the best way to do this is to keep children and teenagers company.
